Javis Davis, an Alabama-based custom bedding and accessories company, has transformed the way that consumers shop for crib and room décor essentials. Javis Davis custom bedding has been the centerpiece for nurseries and children's rooms for almost ten years, helping people everywhere turn a plain space into one they have always dreamed of. Shoppers can peruse Javis Davis fabric collections to create customized crib bedding in the Online Design Studio, and leverage the interactive experience to instantly visualize their highly personalized selections.
Best Practices:
Designing a room is fun – designing the bedding and accessories that your new baby will be brought home to is exhilarating. Javis Davis has made the experience exciting, easy and affordable.
When this family-run business first dreamed of creating a custom bedding company 10 years ago, it seemed doable though difficult to execute, especially across channels. Helping shoppers to create one-of-a-kind bedding ensembles was challenging without a tool to help them visualize what the final product would look like. In fact, a lengthy, many-step process beginning with an initial phone call, followed by fabric swatches mailed via snail mail, proceeded by another phone call detailing all of the available options and respective pricing was in store before a purchase decision could be made. This cumbersome process could take weeks to finalize and the lead time wasn’t going to build the kind of steady revenue that Javis Davis needed to succeed long term. That is when the company began looking for a solution.
Adobe Scene7 quickly rose to the top of Javis Davis' search. "We knew we needed a visual tool to bring our business to life online, and Scene7 was our holy grail…we laid out our plans, what we could afford, and how to pay for it," said Mary Peppo, Director of Marketing at Javis Davis. "On the day we saw the first rendered image online, it was like the skies opened up!"
"We have been thoroughly impressed by the service and support the Scene7 team delivers and the accessibility of the technology – the same solutions that large, Fortune 500 companies use were easily available to us," Peppo added.
Javis Davis' Online Design Studio enables shoppers to select from five different crib styles and then design their custom crib bedding from more than 35 different fabric collections, each featuring anywhere from seven to nine different fabrics. The configurator uses a single product photo to automatically display infinite variations from personal choices—all through "calls" to the Scene7 server in real time. This helps shoppers to dynamically change selections and view how the crib will look using a certain fabric on the outside lining of the bumper, then moving it to the inside or using it for a tie, on the dust ruffle, or on a sheet. Customers can then try as many different combinations as their imagination allows, and since Scene7 rendering is tied to a pricing estimator, customers can design their custom crib and see the costs associated with their selections dynamically calculated, which helps to eliminate confusion and any "surprises" at checkout. This completely immersive and interactive experience engages shoppers and makes it possible to instantly visualize fabric, color choices, and cost, giving them confidence to place their order, question-free.
Before Scene7, Javis Davis was accustomed to photographing every item for the website, from bed skirts to pillow covers. Hours were spent trying to clean up the images and make them look web ready – and positioning cribs at the same angle with the same lighting was arduous to reproduce. "The Scene7 configurator took the pain points out of the production process while offering customers the online visualization they needed to purchase," said Peppo.
And, with fabric collections changing frequently from season to season and even week to week, it was critical for Javis Davis to be able to easily update swatches in the collections or add entirely new collections to the site. Unlike other configurator offerings that require the manual build of new configurations when new items are added, with Scene7, updated swatches can be instantly uploaded and automatically available in the online configurator. This has not only been a great service to customers in search of the latest and greatest fabrics, the configurator also serves as an invaluable back office tool. Staff is able to use the configurator internally to create unique bedding ensembles for customers who call with questions, and will then forward suggestions via email, or will print and mail ideas to shoppers who want to see how the design recommendations made over the phone will look. Javis Davis even uses the configurator to create designs for its inspiration pages online, where multiple configurations from 25 different fabric collections are displayed at any one time.
"Twenty-five percent of shoppers now use the configurator to place an order. That's 25% fewer phone calls, fabric swatches and hand holding!" added Peppo. Javis Davis has confessed that without the Scene7 configurator, the business likely would not have succeeded in the last year and a half. Beyond using the configurator for online image rendering, the company has cleverly leveraged the rendered images for print projects and as a sales tool at Javis Davis' store front in Alabama to help customers who shop in-person. Shoppers may log on to javisdavis.com from within the store and design and watch their creations come to life, which adds another layer of confidence to their purchase decision and converts them to buyers more quickly.
With a seven person staff, and only two sewers and one cutter, this mom and pop shop, with the help of one visual configurator, can turn out customized bedding in a few hours for eager shoppers. At half the price of some of the "high-end" children's specialty stores, Javis Davis creates bedding and accessories—even doll beds—to order, in any favorite fabric. Add to that that every customer review is a five star success story, and you have a perfect example of a small business living its dream.
Results:
Javis Davis credits the Scene7 configurator with keeping business afloat these past 18 months. With 25% of customers using the configurator to place orders, there are 25% fewer phone calls and fabric swatch requests coming in which equates to more time to focus on the ongoing needs of customers. Javis Davis is now branching out into unventured waters…producing exquisite doll beds, now available for purchase, using the same high-end, designer fabrics used in custom bedding orders. Better yet, 99% of the images on the Javis Davis website are rendered by Scene7 now, which has dramatically reduced labor and overhead associated with image management.
"Scene7 has given us renewed excitement for our original concept. If you dream it, Scene7 can make it happen," said Mary Peppo.
